Dr. Kirby Kennedy / Senior Pastor

Dr. Kirby Kennedy came to our church in June, 2018 from Palatka, Florida, where he served as Senior Pastor for five years. Previous to that, he pastored three churches in New Mexico and one in the Seattle area. He has been a pastor for more than 35 years.

With a rich heritage in the faith, Dr. Kennedy was born in Sidney, Nebraska, where his father was a church planter. Across the years, he has been heavily involved in denominational work, including his role as Trustee of Gateway Baptist Theological Seminary and his leadership on National, State Convention and Associational committees.

Dr. Kennedy has been involved in the leadership of the communities he has served with a desire to create a better environment for and encourage the meeting of needs of the people of those communities..

Dr. Kennedy’s education in the ministry includes a BA from Wayland Baptist University, as well as Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

His hobbies include golf, baseball and rock-collecting.

Happily married for more than 33 years, Dr. Kennedy and his wife, Debbie, have two daughters, Sarah and Laura.

Nancy Jakes / Minister of Worship & Administration

Nancy joined the staff of First Baptist Church, Sun City West on September 1, 2014 as part-time Minister of Music. With a love for both senior adults and music, her coming was not only an answer to God’s call on her life, but also the continuation of a twenty-three-year career of working with seniors in various ministry capacities.

In 2001, Nancy became President of Baptist Senior Life Ministries (BSLM), a partner of the Arizona Southern Baptist Convention, and the ministry arm to seniors across the state. She continued in that role until 2012, and later became Interim Minister of Music at First Southern Baptist Church of Phoenix before coming to Sun City West.

Nancy is married to David Jakes who has led both Arizona Baptist Retirement Centers (now LifeStream Complete Senior Living), and Arizona Baptist Children’s Services, and who served as Executive Pastor of First Baptist Church, Sun City West between 2014 and 2016.

Over the past year, Nancy’s duties have been expanded to include not only music and worship, but also administration. She has a great love for senior adults and in helping them realize God still has a special plan for them to utilize their unique gifts and talents in serving Him.

Dr. Ron Hornecker / Minister of Counseling

Dr. Ron Hornecker is certified as a Fellow in the American Association of Pastoral Counselors.  He earned his M.Div. and D.Min. degrees from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, MO.  His pastoral experience (1963-85) involved serving four churches in Missouri.  From 1985-2006 he was on the faculty of Golden Gate Seminary directing the Doctor of Ministry and Field Education programs.  In addition to clinical and supervision experiences, he completed the counseling training program at the Lloyd Center Pastoral Counseling Center, an AAPC training center located near San. Francisco, CA. He also served as a part of the on-call staff, seeing clients on a weekly basis from 1999-2004.  He was elected as the Minister of Counseling at First Baptist Church, SCW in 2006.

Carol Woods / Financial Secretary

Carol Woods came to Arizona from southern California after her husband, Tom, passed away. Tom was a southern Baptist Pastor coming from Missouri and moving to California where he pastored his last church for 22 years. Carol was very active ministering with her husband, especially in the area of Women’s Ministry.

With a rich background in banking and financial management, Carol was hired in 2013 for the position of Financial Secretary. Her duties at FBCSCW are many and varied, working with the Finance Committee and acting as Purchasing Agent for the church. Carol’s great love for the Lord led her to become a Bible Study teacher and help others use the Word of God as a pathway to personal commitment and a closer relationship with God.

Caroll Swinney / Secretary – Media Tech

Caroll Swinney taught theatre, speech and film in public schools and on the college level before retiring and coming onboard as a secretary for FBCSCW. Her job as “phone answerer and bulletin maker” evolved into the assignment of Audio-Visual/Media Tech for the church. Working at the church has allowed her to use her skills to visually enhance the worship experience for church members and use the relationships with fellow church members to fully develop her walk in faith with Jesus Christ.

Caroll’s husband, Bill, is member of the Deacon Council and teaches a Bible Study class at FBCSCW. Caroll acts as Activities Chairman for the class and as a substitute teacher in Bill’s absence.

Betty Hare / Church Secretary

Betty Hare has worked as the Church Secretary for FBCSCW for two years, after being an office volunteer for several months. She and her husband, Truman, retired, left California where Betty had worked in the aerospace industry and traveled around the country in their RV. Deciding to settle in Sun City West, they joined FBCSCW in 2007. Betty has involved herself in numerous committees in the Library Committee, the Finance Committee, the Nominating and was a founding member of the church Book Club. She is a member of the Quilting Club of Sun City West and participates in their events on a regular basis.

Brian Smith/Building and Grounds Coordinator
Brian Smith was born in Bloomington, Illinois and moved with his family to Greeley, Colorado at the age of two.  after spending 32 years in the mountains of Colorado, the family relocated to Sun City West, Arizona and joined First Baptist Church, Sun City West on May 25, 1997, their first Sunday in the area.
Brian began working as Building and Grounds Coordinator for First Baptist Church on April 1, 2005.  He is responsible for setup of Bible study classrooms and various meeting areas, as well as preparing the Sanctuary for weekly worship services.  His ministry is vital to making certain our buildings and grounds are inviting and ready for worship and study.
When not working at the church, Brian enjoys bowling and working on his computer.
